# Subscriptions and digital contracts

Subscription journeys combine offer presentation, pre-contract information, consent to payment, renewal, account control and termination. Current EU consumer and contract rules already govern several of these stages. The announced DFA may address identified digital problems, but no team should treat a possible reminder, button or cancellation requirement as final until supported by published legal text.

Earlier source baseline: 2026-08-09. Source comparison: 2026-09-14. 14 September comparison added current institutional context. Several underlying EUR-Lex provision texts could not be retrieved, so the detailed legal mapping retains its earlier baseline. No new full-text or personal legal review is claimed.

## Map the lifecycle

Capture acquisition, trial conversion, billing notice, plan change, renewal, failed payment, cancellation and post-cancellation access. Record the rule and system owner at each step. ## Withdrawal and continuing-contract cancellation are different

The Commission records application of Directive (EU) 2023/2673 from 19 June 2026. ECC Finland explains the online withdrawal function for contracts within the statutory withdrawal framework. Review that function separately from termination of an ongoing subscription, preserve other permitted withdrawal channels and check applicable national transposition. This is existing consumer-law context, not a new DFA duty. ## What does this look like in a customer journey?

Illustrative example 1 · Free-to-annual trial conversion

A fictional productivity service promotes a seven-day free trial on mobile, but the annual price, conversion date and renewal term sit below a fixed “Start free” control and are not brought into view before signup.

Why it may matter: A user may enter a recurring paid contract without understanding when or how much they will be charged; present-law analysis depends on the transaction, information, timing and presentation.

Illustrative example 2 · Subscription exit journey

A fictional meal-plan service accepts signup online in two steps but requires a phone call, two retention offers and a reason questionnaire before it will accept a cancellation request.

Why it may matter: Channel switching and avoidable steps may obstruct a consumer’s intended exit, although identity and account-protection checks can sometimes justify proportionate friction.

## What is a fairer or lower-risk alternative?

Review the full lifecycle from acquisition to post-cancellation access. Put price, duration, conversion and renewal consequences at the relevant decision point, make available rights and exit routes usable, and retain versioned evidence. Do not present a preferred reminder cadence or generic cancellation button as a final DFA requirement.

**What this comparison covered**

The Commission preparation record and Parliament tracker still describe an announced Digital Fairness Act, with an indicative proposal in Q4 2026. The EESC file now schedules its advisory opinion for the October plenary. Existing consumer rules have their own application dates.

This source comparison checked the initiative record, institutional timetable and research classification behind the learning material. Several EUR-Lex full texts could not be retrieved. Detailed provision mappings retain that verification limit; this is not a fresh legal opinion or a determination about any interface.
